ISTE Standard 2

Students recognize the rights, responsibilities and opportunities of living, learning and working in an interconnected digital world, and they act and model in ways that are safe, legal and ethics.

2a. Students cultivate and manage their digital identity and reputation and are aware of the permanence of their actions in the digital world.
2b. Students engage in positive, safe, legal and ethical behavior when using technology, including social interactions online or when using networked devices.
2c. Students demonstrate an understanding of and respect for the rights and obligations of using and sharing intellectual property.
2d. Students manage their personal data to maintain digital privacy and security and are aware of data-collection technology used to track their navigation online.

This lesson is focused on meeting standard 2b. “engaging in positive, safe, legal, and ethical behavior.”

Context

• Grade level: 8th
• Class length: 50 min (To be completed over approximately 1 week with 5 classes)
• First lesson in this series. However, students have some prior knowledge about controversial topics in science.
• Technology: 1:1 device, headphones, access to Google sides/docs

Tools

To create the hyper doc, my partner and I used several different technology tools. Some of the more basic tools we used included Google docs and Google slides. We liked being able to easily link to outside resources that we had not created and share the documents with each other and our students. We used Google docs as an assessment tool to collect/document what students were learning. We used Google slides as a tool to deliver content in a step-by-step process where students just had to advance the next slide to continue through the module. Additionally, we used screencast-o-matic as a tool to deliver direct instruction to students. We used Google forms as a way to collect formative assessment of students and then show students the data that we collected as a way to discuss their results in what media they were reading as biased versus less biased. Finally, we used Padlet as a class discussion tool.

Reflection

I liked the process of creating a hyperdoc because it had me think through every decision I was making as the teacher. I also like to ability to easily differentiate for different students in the class. For example, in one of the activities, we added some more challenging readings for students who might want to read more. I also liked the ability to use many different technologies and integrate them all into one place. One thing I found was that creating this hyperdoc took a lot of time to find all the information and create a lot of the content as well. I like that is multimedia friendly for students and offers them access to different texts. Chris and I were discussing how it would be cool to also include a kid-friendly podcast in the future.
